Facts & Myths About Common Skincare Needs
/ By Natalie Kingsley-Fieldgrass
To prepare for colder months, adapting your skincare is essential. Natalie's curated her favourite fall skincare for a glowing autumn complexion.
In this blog, we will explore various skincare facts and myths. As social media posts increasingly influence individuals' choices, the nuances of each topic highlight the importance of understanding our goals and skin needs. Natalie Kingsley-Fieldgrass, the founder of the Embassy of Beauty and Skincare Expert, will delve into the skincare world and uncover the facts, myths, and essential considerations that can help you achieve healthy and radiant skin.
Myths
1. Only exfoliate when you have dry skin.
Exfoliation is beneficial for all skin types, not just dry skin. It removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores, improves skin tone, enhances product absorption, and has anti-ageing benefits. Natalie recommends using Lotion P50 based on your skin's specific needs. Dry or sensitive skin should use gentler exfoliants and exfoliate less frequently. Oily or resilient skin can exfoliate more often.
2. IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT CONSUMING CHOCOLATE CAN LEAD TO BREAKOUTS.
The link between chocolate and acne is complex. Studies have shown a link between high-glycemic index foods, including chocolate, and acne. However, acne is complex and influenced by multiple factors, including genetics, hormones and diet. Dark chocolate with high cocoa content may have fewer adverse effects than milk chocolate. Moderation and a balanced diet are essential. Other factors, such as sugary and high-GI foods and dairy, may also affect acne development. For acne-prone skin, it is recommended to use cleansing and healing agents such as Iris Extract, Zinc Extract, Salicylic Acid, and Red Poppy Extract. These can be found in Complexe Iribiol, which helps prevent and reduce acne.
3. COCONUT SERVES AS AN EXCELLENT FACIAL MOISTURISER.
Coconut oil is not an ideal facial moisturiser due to its high comedogenicity, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. It can also irritate sensitive skin and may not provide enough hydration for dry skin. It does not offer sun protection and can contain additives that may be irritating. If you're a fan of coconut oil, Natalie recommends using COCOCAPRYLATE/CAPRATE for its prebiotic properties and for its non-comedogenic nature; it will help balance the good and bad bacteria on the skin. This ingredient can be found in the Biologique Recherche facial cleansers, such as the Lait VIP02 that will gently cleanse your skin, and remove impurities while brightening it.
4. REGULAR USE OF MAKEUP MAY CONTRIBUTE TO ACCELERATED AGEING.
Regular use of makeup may contribute to premature ageing, but it depends on various factors, like the type of makeup, its ingredients, and how individuals take care of their skin. Harsh elements, expired makeup, and excessive scrubbing can cause skin irritation, breakouts, and wrinkles. Genetics, lifestyle, sun exposure and overall skincare routines also play a role in the rate of ageing. Avoid sleeping with makeup to maintain a youthful appearance. Use a cleanser that suits your skin type before bedtime- Lait S.R. for oily or acne-prone skin and Lait E.V. for dry complexions.
5. THE ORDER IN WHICH YOU APPLY YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS DoeS NOT SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT THEIR EFFECTIVENESS.
The order in which you apply skincare products matters. Thinner products go first, and thicker products go last. Active ingredients should be applied before creams. The order prevents product interactions and ensures optimal performance. A basic routine includes cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturiser. Additional treatments should be applied before moisturising at night. Skincare routines vary, so follow product instructions or consult one of our skincare professionals.
6. TO ATTAIN GOOD SKIN, IT IS NECESSARY TO UTILISE NUMEROUS SKINCARE PRODUCTS.
It is a myth to use numerous skincare products to attain good skin. What is essential is a skincare routine tailored to your skin type, concerns, and personal preferences. The goal is to use the right products consistently and to prioritise the quality and effectiveness of those products over the quantity.
