How does Microneedling work? Everything you need to know.

One of our customers' absolute favourite treatments is microneedling. Let's dive into the procedure and explore all the reasons why you should consider it.
The journey to flawless skin often leads us down various paths. Among these, microneedling stands out as a revolutionary technique, celebrated for its ability to rejuvenate and revitalise the skin. It might sound scary at first, but when carried out by expertly trained professionals that initial fear turns into substantial appreciation of its results.
Before we dive into one of our customers favourite treatments, let’s break down what the procedure itself is, and why you should consider it.
While it is commonly known as microneedling, the treatment also goes by a few other names such as derma rolling, skin needling, and our personal favourite, collagen induction therapy. No matter what moniker a clinic is marketing as, the principle remains the same.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling essentially consists of repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny (micro), sterile needles. But why injure your skin with needles? As counterproductive as it may seem, those tiny holes actually lead to healthier, more resilient skin. By creating controlled micro-punctures, microneedling prompts a mild inflammatory response within the epidermal layer, which in turn kickstarts the skin's natural repair mechanisms. This process initiates the release of various growth factors that stimulate fibroblast activity, facilitating the restoration of the skin's integrity. As fibroblasts become activated, they commence the synthesis of essential structural proteins like collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans (naturally occurring hyaluronic acid) leaving your skin firmer and plumper. Microneedling can also help break up and disperse excess melanin deposits resulting in brighter and more even toned complexion.
Not only that, but the needles also break down hardened scar tissue, allowing it to revascularise. This essentially translates to “tricking” the scar tissue to heal again, but with a much smoother, softer appearance. If you’re not convinced just yet, 5 days after treatment, a skin matrix of deposited collagen is formed at the injury site, resulting in skin tightening benefits that persist a whopping for 5-7 YEARS after your initial treatment. Research (click if you’re a science geek) has proven that skin which has been recently needled is able to absorb products much better, enhancing the results of serums and ampoules tenfold.
While microneedling has the same foundation for all different types of procedures, the final results are highly dependent by needle size, treatment frequency and also topical products used during and after use. The length of the needles usually range from 0.1mm to 1.5mm on the face and even deeper on the body. The longer the needles, the more the more trauma is caused as it penetrates deeper into the skin. But that doesn’t necessarily equate to better results and, in fact can increase the risk of side effects. Needle size is chosen by your practitioner based off of skin thickness, concerns and area treated.
The size of the needle matters because skin damage occurs on different levels of the epidermis. Oftentimes wrinkles are more superficial, so shorter needles can suffice. But when it comes to scarring, the damage is deeper and requires a more intensive treatment.

Are there any side effects to Microneedling?
Another concern of clients are the possible side effects of the treatment. With any procedure, you should know there is always a risk of complications. All skin is different, and factors such as genetics or diet can play a role in how your skin would react to any given treatment. Thankfully, because of the gentle nature of microneedling offered at our clinic, complications are quite rare. Your skin may experience temporary erythema, which is actually normal and should be expected, especially in Fitzpatrick Types 1-3 (think Nicole Kidman, Drew Barrymore, Anne Hathaway).
The treatment is generally safe for all skin type and tones, however for those with darker skin types prone to pigmentation marks we may recommend incorporating tyrosinase inhibiting products, like Biologique Recherche Serum PIGM 400 throughout the course of treatment to minimise any chance for post-inflammatory pigmentation. This brightening serum is formulated with lightening and brightening Watercress Sprout and Plum extracts alongside antioxidant rich Wasabi extract that protects from irritating and damaging free radicals. While to combat post-treatment redness, a calming cream such as Emulsion Gel Biosensible, also from Biologique Recherche would be a great choice.
This calming emulsion utilises Kudzu Extract, Vitamin E and Moisturising Plant Sugars to restore and soothe delicate post-treatment skin.
Even though the side effects above are the most common, a more serious complication can be infection at the treatment site. This usually occurs when treatment is not carried out in a clean, sterile environment. Or if instruments and skin is not thoroughly sanitised prior to treatment. Because the needles penetrate skin, they should never be reused by different clients. In fact, the same client should not use the same needles in more than one treatment.
