Welcome to the issue where we will be talking and learning all about how to deal with rough and dull … otherwise known in the biz, as keratinised skin!
Firstly, we will be identifying what Keratinised skin actually is, how it happens and then how to treat it.
Did you know that the largest organ of your body is your skin? It includes the outer covering – the Epidermis, that protects the inner layers of the skin, from the elements and is also necessary for heat regulation, sensation, and making vitamin D, amongst many other things - Interesting I know!
"SO, Where does it come from?”
Now for the fun facts… and stay with me I promise it gets interesting!
Our body constantly produces new skin cells, as dead skin cells are shed from the surface of the skin. New cells travel up through the epidermis until they reach the top layer, while pushing the older-dead cells off. This is healthy, and if it works efficiently, you would have an extremely healthy, hydrated and vibrant complexion!
BUT, sometimes these dead skin cells accumulate, forming a layer of dry scales that don’t shed properly, because the natural exfoliation process is being compromised. This occurs naturally as we age, as our cell turnover slows down, but it also happens when the skin is exposed to harsh elements such as wind and cold weather, when the cold, dry air strips the skin of water, leaving it rough and flaky, which is exactly what we have in winter in the UK!
"SO WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?”
Keratinisation is a normal physiological process which turns the outer layer of the skin into a hard-protective cover.
Due to the harsh weather we face here in lovely sunny England, this tends to be somewhat more prominent for us locals! (If you know, you know!)
So, what does this ‘keratinised’ skin look like?
Your skin will appear grey-ish and thick, like you have a thick crackly opaque sheet on top of your skin. This is because of a build-up of dead skin cells, which need to be removed in an exfoliation process.
So, now we know what keratinised skin looks and feels like, the next question is, how do we get rid of it?!
It’s a 3-step process! – I know what you’re thinking, but don’t worry, it’s easy!
Step One: Exfoliate
We start off by exfoliating the skin, this breaks down the layers of keratinisation, removes dead skin cells and impurities and enables us to get to the deeper layers so products can be more effective for the next step of removal.
When exfoliating, we use our hero product, the wonderful Lotion P50!
The balancing and exfoliating Lotion P50 speeds up the skin’s natural exfoliating process and reconstruction of its shield.
This means that dull, greyish layer is broken down and the skin’s self-regeneration potential is enhanced – Magic!
But which Lotion P50!?
Well, depending on your skin type, we would advise one of the following two as these are best for keratinised skin:
Starting with: Lotion P50W
Skin Instants®: Thin and/or Reactive to Normal
This is our gentlest exfoliator, infused with Arnica, it soothes and protects the skin whilst it slowly penetrates the skin to remove dead cells and impurities. It then strengthens the skin through enhancing skin cell renewal – I told you, it’s magic!
The skin’s PH is balanced, and excess oils are kept at bay thanks to its oil regulating properties! Packed with powerful Hydroxy Acids and exfoliants including Lactic and Salicylic Acid, this lotion will chemically remove dead skin cells so you can kiss your manual one’s goodbye!
Next, we have our slightly stronger Lotion P50:
Skin Instants®: Devitalised and/or Less Toned
The Lotion P50V is our medium strength formulation. It is formulated for a stronger skin, one that needs a more powerful exfoliation, or a more mature skin instant.
The Lotion P50V works in the same way as the Lotion P50W, however it has the added minerals and vitamins required for a stronger Skin Instants® such as Magnesium and Vitamin B3. These agents also help to purify and regulate oil levels in the skin.
For the first two weeks of use, apply a few drops to dampened cotton pads with cold water, and press and release, patting the product all over face, neck and décolleté, morning and evening. Please do not rub and only pass over each area once. After two weeks of use, if the skin is not sensitive to the product, switch to dry cotton pads.
So! Now that we have broken down those layers, it’s time to hydrate and nourish that beautiful skin of yours!
Step Two: Hydrate & Nourish
The first step towards healthy, hydrated skin is the serum!
Serums are generally made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate more deeply into the skin than a cream. Through this they are able to deliver a very high concentration of ingredients to make a big impact on the skin’s hydration levels. Once we have stripped away those dull layers, it’s time to hydrate and the best way to start this next stage of treatment is with one of these two amazing serums.
Meet our first and most intensive Hydrating Serum:
Skin Instants®: Very Dehydrated and/or Dull
Sérum Colostrum delivers powerful hydration, to ensure the skin is replenished and deeply nourished. Infused with Colostrum Milk Protein, this serum will provide the immediate comfort and protection required for your skin once you have started the process of removing Keratinised skin.
Your skin will be left comforted, supple and deeply hydrated, ready for your next phase of treatment.
How to use: Lightly massage 10 drops of Sérum Colostrum onto clean skin over the entire face, neck and décolleté until the product has been completely absorbed.
Our second level of Hydrating Serum is the:
Skin Instants®: Average Dehydrated Skins
This serum is specially formulated to inject the skin with gentle hydration, perfect for calming stressed and slightly dehydrated Skin Instants®.
Its soothing and hydrating properties are derived from Botanical Amniotic Fluid and Prickly Pear Cactus Extract, providing long-term hydration and regeneration.
Your skin will be left comfortably hydrated, smooth and restored.
How to use: Lightly massage 10 drops of Sérum Amniotique onto clean skin over the entire face, neck and décolleté until the product has been completely absorbed.
So now that we have started the exfoliation process and injected in some much-needed hydration, it’s time to add some nourishment!
Why is it important we nourish are skin especially after having exfoliated and hydrated?
This is because once we have broken down those layers and hydrated the skin, we can then appropriately add all the essential fatty acids and oils to make and keep our skin and supple as soft as possible, as well as creating a barrier to keep the hydration in!
May I introduce to you our saviours of nourishment, starting with the:
Skin Instants®: Deficient and/or Stressed
This cream and mask combo concentrates on deeply nourishing, protecting, and strengthening the skin.
This mask was formulated by cleverly cloning the DNA of a baby's vernix, the first epidermal protection at birth, which has extremely powerful healing and reconditioning properties.
How to use: Apply a thin layer of Crème Masque Vernix in the morning and/or evening on the entire face, neck and décolleté. Massage gently with fingertips, from bottom to top and inside to outside, until completely absorbed.
To achieve a mask effect, apply in thick layer. Leave for about 20 minutes then delicately remove any excess with a damp cotton pad.
Next, we have our comforting nourisher, the:
Skin Instants®: Dehydrated and Dry
Loaded with Blackcurrant butter, Omegas 3 & 6, and Hyaluronic Acid, this is the ultimate nourishment for your skin. It reverses the skin’s deficiency in essential fats, repairs, restructures and visibly reconditions the skin. At the same time as all of this, it provides an immediate sensation of comfort!
Your skin is left immediately, hydrated, softened and protected.
How to use: Apply a hazelnut-sized amount of Crème Dermo-RL over all the face, neck and décolleté. Massage delicately with fingertips, working with upward and outward strokes until the product is fully absorbed.
Now onto our third nourisher, the fantastic comforting veil:
Skin Instants®: Dry and/or Sensitive
After exfoliating, your skin can feel a little stiff and tight but thanks to Crème VG Derm, you will feel immediate relief of any of these sensations.
Infused with hydrating Milk Peptides, nourishing polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and revitalising Yeast Extract, this cream truly has all the makings of a repairing, restoring and nourishing cream.
Apply Crème VG Derm to your entire face, neck and décolleté avoiding the eye area. Massage delicately with fingertips, working with upward and outward strokes until the product is fully absorbed.
So now it is time for the third step:
Step Three: Apply A Finishing Serum
The reason why this is the last step of the process is because a Finishing Serum helps seal in all the products and goodness you have just put into your skin.
This means your skin is protected which is so important at this time of year, especially when we are facing cold weather and dry central heating! This then causes dryness and dullness (that we are trying to rid ourselves of!). This serum will ensure hydration will be locked in continuously throughout the day.
Finishing Serums also contain a protective blend of the highest concentrated ingredients to ensure that your skin glows with radiance! Now we’re talking!
Let me introduce you to:
All Skin Instants®. Ideal for Dehydrated/Dry
Offering extraordinary hydration and rejuvenation, this serum is packed full of hyaluronic acid and the secret BR Oxygenating Complex to leave your skin looking at its very best!
Sérum Yall~O2 revitalises and reinforces the skin’s elasticity with the hydrating agents Hyaluronic Acid, Marine Collagen.
It then oxygenates the skin with the specific BR Oxygenating Complex.
A protective film is formed over the skin and optimal hydration levels are promoted. This leaves the skin looking perfectly plumped with a beautiful dewy-glow finish.
With the added antioxidant and protective Agent of Pomegranate Extract, your skin will be protected throughout the day from any nasty pollutants. Hibiscus and lily extracts regenerate and heal to maintain a gorgeous finishing veil throughout the day.
How to use: Apply a few drops of Sérum Yall~O2 to the entire face, neck and décolleté in the morning and/or in the evening. Alternatively, a few drops can also be mixed into your cream.
